How to read these figures

Exports are goods leaving the United States for Canada; imports are goods entering the United States from Canada. The balance is exports minus imports, so a negative value is a U.S. goods deficit and a positive value is a surplus.

U.S. exports to Canada use the official U.S.–Canada data-exchange process: Canadian import records are used to compile U.S. exports to Canada. That treatment differs from exports to most other partners and is one reason the source definition matters.

What the figures do not establish

A bilateral balance is an accounting measure, not a scorecard of whether trade is beneficial. Changes can reflect prices, exchange rates, demand, inventories, supply chains, product mix, and timing. They do not by themselves prove that a tariff caused the movement.

The displayed realized duty burden is not a blanket legal tariff rate for everything imported from Canada. See the guide below for the distinction.
